2013 Achievement Awards
Friday, March 8, 2013 at 7:00 PM - Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 1:00 AM (PST)
San Francisco, CA
Welcome to the 2013 Achievement Awards!
This event aims to highlight and commemorate successful business professionals, cultural personalities and successful women in the Bay Area. The Swedish Disaspora in San Francisco is a vast network of highly motivated and successful men and women. The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce wishes to acknowledge the achievements and efforts undertaken by these individuals with a celebratory Gala every 18 months.
The evening is co-presented with the Swedish Consulate and is a black tie Gala with a three course gourmet dinner, entertainment as well as the Awards. This event features explorer Johan Ernst Nilson as the keynote speaker, Master of Ceremonies – author Björn Ranelid, and one of Sweden’s biggest pop sensations – Sofia Talvik.
Our keynote speaker for the evening is one of the worlds most experienced explorers – Johan Ernst Nilson. Born in Stockholm he started his adventurous career in 1994 after a bet. A friend dared him to bicycle from his hometown of Stockholm to the Sahara desert – a neat distance of 7500 km. He accepted and saw it through. Since then he has accomplished close to 30 adventures in 100 different countries. Curious to what it takes to climb the “Seven summits”, i. e. the highest mountains on each of the seven continents? Or maybe you would like to get an adventurers recommendation on how to best travel from pole to pole? This particular Odyssey took Johan one year to accomplish, with the help of of skis, a kite, a dogsled, a sailing boat and a bicycle. The ambition was to accomplish the adventure in a “climate neutral” way, reflecting Johan’s interest for environment and for climate-related issues. A passion that has made him known as the “ environmental explorer”, in addition he has been appointed Ambassador for one of the world’s biggest environmental organizations. So- prepare yourself for an adventure!
Our Master of Ceremonies is one of Sweden’s most renowned writers, Mr Björn Ranelid. He is legendary for his poetic language and elegant prose and we can look forward to him guiding us through the evening in exactly the same graceful manner. This year Björn celebrates nothing less than thirty years as a writer. During this time he has published close to thirty (!) novels, written more than 800 articles and performed close to 4000 times on stage – a resume that probably makes him one of Sweden’s most active writers. He has become very dear to the Swedish audience, not at least due to his numerous appearances in different popular TV-shows. He has been seen singing in the Swedish national selection for the Eurovision song contest as well as dancing in the popular program “Dancing with the stars”. In addition one of the most renowned publishing houses in Sweden has called him “the Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Literature”. So with this multi-talent as our Master of ceremonies only one thing is for sure: we can only expect the unexpected!
One very important detail is missing in order to make this evening in Julia Morgan’s Ballroom truly enchanting – music! Born on an island just off the west coast of Sweden Sofia Talvik will give us her unique, melodic blend of folk- and pop music. Not only described as the “next rising star of Sweden” her music has also rendered good critiques and appreciation in the US. Sofia is currently on an extensive tour in the US; promoting her latest album “The Owls Are Not What They Seem”. Luckily for us she also passes through San Francisco in order to mesmerize us with some her some of her musical magic…
